Why WordPress?
Blogs are here to stay, and many are taking advantage of the trend. A blog is like a normal website except it has a few key elements that make them preferable over other websites. Some of these elements are:
- simple to set up
- relatively easy to update.
- allows you to very easily add text post, audio and video.
- Content can be updated frequently and easily especially when compared to other websites.
- Visitors can leave comments making it interactive which helps you build relationships.
- People tend to trust information on blogs than on the static websites.
Within just a few minutes, you can set up a professional looking blog for free and start your online business.
There are basically two types of blogs; an externally hosted blog is where someone else is hosting your blog for you on a remote computer or server and provides you with the software to run your blog, usually at no charge. A self hosted blog is where you own your own domain name or website address and set it up on your own server for storing files of your blog, generally costing $5-10 per month for hosting.
The draw back of externally hosted blogs is that you don’t own your own domain name which means it can be switched off at any point and may I add for no logical reason.
If you own your own domain you have complete control of your domain and content. You can always move your blog files to another server if your server shuts down or for any reason you are unsatisfied with your server. This is one of the big benefits and I’ll explain a few more in a minute.
WordPress offers both options and can sometimes be confusing for people who are just starting so I will explain the difference.
WordPress.com is an externally hosted blog platform (ie free but at a greater cost of not having control) while worpress.org allows you to have a self hosted blog. If you are new to blogging you can play around with externally hosted blogs (wordpress.com) but as a business owner you will ultimately want a self hosted blog (wordpress.org).
WordPress.org is the best solution for anyone who wants to start a blog but doesn’t know how to go about it. It is among the easiest tools on the web and makes developing blogs quick and easy to understand.
You won’t even need to be familiar with the internet universe because with WordPress you can manipulate the templates to fit your needs without having to know HTML, XHTML, or anything about designing websites. It is a versatile tool that allows you to have complete control over the design and content of your blog.
There are many great reasons to choose WordPress.org to start a blog. Some of these reasons include:
- a great variety of templates,
- thousands and thousands of widgets and plugins
- the ability to categorize and tag posts easily,
- features such as spell check, previews and autosave,
- a variety of privacy options and
- the ability to track statistical data related to the blog.
When I was putting together my first blog I spent hours and hours searching for information on how to get started with a wordpress.org blog. I later found some videos at NoSweatWordPress.com that have everything in one place and could have saved me so much time.
Even though it is a simple process that once learned is like riding a bike, if you don’t know where to begin, in just a few hours you can learn exactly how to set up and use wordpress for maximum speed and profit, shaving weeks off the learning curve. The videos are very educational and worth the $14.
If you’re short on time and don’t want to learn or do the set up yourself, my friends at Free Blog Factory will set one up for you in 24 hours for free. They also provide you with lots of free video training.
To summarize; WordPress.org gives you more control over your blog, provides more options for customizing your blog and offers an amazing amount of powerful features you would not otherwise get with free platforms.
